I am Laura from the UK and have been enjoying my time in Australia by spending it working in and around Sydney. Having previously had a career in hospitality I was keen to try something new. After being recruited on the street I found, to my surprise, fundraising to be one of the best jobs I've ever had!
The people we meet with personal experiences of breast cancer inspire us to work on for them. I enjoy raising awareness within the general public of the issues and goals of a charity determined in their mission toward a future without breast cancer.
What I love most about it are the people I meet, the stories I hear, the Australian sunshine and the friends I've made.
Of course I'm also inspired by some of the people I meet who have their own breast cancer story. I had a conversation with a young man who had a family member pass away that same day after losing her battle with breast cancer. His grief mixed with his appreciation for the work done by us and by the National Breast Cancer Foundation has stayed with me to this day; it was truly an inspirational conversation!"
I'm Katta from Germany. I spent 18 months in Australia, eight of them working for The Fundraising People. Working for The Fundraising People was a great experience. Not only did I make great friends, many of whom I'm still in contact with, I also learned a lot about other people and myself.
Working as a fundraiser gets you out of your comfort zone by dealing with issues and with people you usually would not encounter. Not only do you meet different personalities every day, you also get an insight into of other cultures and views. After two months I was promoted to be team leader. Taking responsibility for a team of about four fundraisers teaches you great leading skills and you learn a lot about being a team player and how important it is to support each other. Not only did I celebrate my own success at the end of a working day, but the success of the entire team. After all, I worked with my friends every day. One of the most important things was that I was safe in the knowlegde that I always had the support of my campaign manager who would help and support as much as he could. This helped a great deal, especially in the first couple of weeks as I never feltl alone on the street. The Fundraising People has a great national community with offices in many Australian cities so once I felt the urge to travel again, it was no problem for me to make my way South and start fundraising for The Fundraising People in Melbourne. These months in Sydney and Melbourne were a big part of my great Aussie experience and I wouldn't change it for a second. Cheers guys!I worked for The Fundrasing People for three months working on behalf of UNICEF Australia and I loved every moment of it! I got to work with and make close friends with some of the most amazing people from all over the world, whilst at the same time helping out a great cause. My favourite part of the job was the travel trips; I was getting paid to work in areas of Australia that I would have normally never had seen. Management were great, they looked after us very well. They were always there to help and support us. I am continuously looking back at my time with The Fundraising People and I will never forget the time I spent working there!
My name is Wendy Baumgarten, I am 21 years old, I come from Germany and I have lived in Australia for the last two years. When I first came to Sydney, I was lucky enough to run into a fundraiser working on behalf of UNICEF Australia who recruited me as a fundraiser for The Fundraising People.
Instead of leaving the big city after a few months, I extended my stay in Sydney for half a year, because I simply enjoyed my job that much.
The Fundraising People is more than a work place - it is a big international family. You are made to feel really welcome by all the staff.
Through this job you have the opportunity to meet new people every day, chat with them and even become really good friends. I've never called people that I worked with colleagues; I called them "my mates"-even the managers are really easy going and willing to help you. The general feeling that I had is simply awesome and it couldn't be the best job in the world without them.Hi everybody! I spent one year in Australia in 2011. I worked for The Fundraising People for eight months and it was such an experience.
I started working for them as a joke and never thought I could do this kind of job. I could not speak English properly and could not understand the Aussie accent, but I gave myself a chance and it was worth it!
I had the opportunity to learn English, to grow as leader of a team, had so much fun with my team and with all the staff and met wonderful people who I'm still in touch with.
After eight months I decided that was time for me to go back to my country, but I do miss so much every single day spent out there making a difference and enjoying good times with good people.
I'm thankful to every single person who I've been working with who gave me the chance to learn something new.
My favourite aspect of working for The Fundraising People is the culture that surrounds it, the sense of community amongst the fundraisers really elevates it above and beyond the average job; it feels like a family.
The management truly care about the cause which shows through in every action. There's a real sense that if you want to be here, then you're nurtured and developed within the company to reach your full potential. You're not just another cog in the machine - you're made to feel like an integral part of the company's success, which creates a sense of pride in the work that you do. Plus if you're a team leader... Company iPhone baby! Possibly the only customer relations job on the planet where you get to choose the customer. If you like the look of someone, then you go and say hello. If they say hello back then you haven't just met a potential donor... For a brief time you've become an inspiration to someone... And maybe even a friend.
